HE Level 4 Certificate in Islamic Studies
Course outline
This one-year intensive course is designed for students who wish to study Islam through a structured programme to an advanced level covering the key subjects of the Alimiyyah programme, including classical Arabic. In addition, the course covers contemporary content developed in the study of Islam. The course is delivered in a higher education environment and aims to develop a critical understanding of the topics from a range of perspectives.
Who will benefit from this course?
Those with basic knowledge of Islam: It is ideal for those who wish to advance their knowledge of Islam through a structured programme within a period of one year. In particular, those taking a gap year might find taking this course beneficial as it would provide them with a strong foundational knowledge of Islam covering the key subjects of an Alimiyyah course within one-year of intensive study.
Those who already hold an Alimiyyah qualification: Students who have already completed an Alimiyyah course can apply to only take the assessments. This will enable them to gain a recognised Level 4 Certificate in Higher Education in Islamic Studies, awarded by Newman University.
What will the course cover?
The following modules are offered over a 12-month period:
EntryRequirements: Applicants must be 18 years or over and possess GCSEs (level 4/grade C pass in English is required), and A-Level equivalent qualifications or some evidence of basic knowledge of Islam is required. Eligible students should be able to read the Qur’an in Arabic.
Those who have already completed their Alimiyyah course can apply for the Assessment Only Route.
Mode of delivery: The course employs a hybrid mode of delivery (in-person and online sessions) and a blended learning approach. This approach provides flexibility to students to arrange their studies along side other commitments. Some modules will be delivered online during weekends.
Contact Hours: 12 hours per week x 40 weeks
Class time: Monday and Tuesday’s for the core modules. Other modules will be timetabled for weekends
